THE BUGS THAT MAKE US. WE HAVE MORE MICROBES THAN HUMAN CELLS IN OUR BODIES! THEY LOVE US AND WE LOVE THEM - THE HUMAN MICROBIOME TELLS US WHY.
Microbes consist of bacteria, fungi and viruses. They live not only – everywhere – but, on us, as well as in us, and make up a huge portion of what we think of as our bodies. According to this short video, entitled, “The Invisible Universe of the Human Microbiome” by NPR and artist, Ben Arthur, there are 100 times more cells from microbes in, and on, our bodies than human cells. Our own human genes, are outnumbered by the genes of microbes 100 to 1.
The complex and diverse collection of microbes that interact with, and are essential for, our bodies to function properly, is known as the human microbiome. The human microbiome, consists of the billions of unicellular organisms and viruses that make up the unique communities of microflora found throughout our bodies.
These essential communities protect us from harmful environmental exposures by covering our skin and lining our intestines, as well as other pieces and parts that come into contact with the surrounding world. They digest our food for us, keep us healthy, improve our immunity and keep our figurative engines running. When they become out of balance – this is where we run into everything from skin and digestive issues, to illnesses and chronic conditions.
Our ancestors had more diversity in their internal and external microbial kingdoms.
The microbes that make us work how we work, act as both a barrier and a bridge between us and the outside world, depending upon your point of view. Without them, we wouldn't be able to function properly. Take a look at the informative cartoon video below and see for yourself.
Even though some of us may not like the thought of being covered in bacteria – it’s essential to our health and required by our bodies. One way to keep the balance, as depicted below, is to consume metaphorical cupcakes, or prebiotics, healthy food, (probably the opposite of cupcakes) that microbes want to gobble up too, in order to keep everything balanced and delightful. And maybe, chill out with the antibiotics and sanitizers, eh?
Watch this great video, learn some stuff – and stay happy and healthy out there.
